Summer around here means a lot of time on the water. Boating on Lake George, paddleboarding on Saratoga Lake, and watching the kids jump off the dock all afternoon are the best parts of living in this area. But water and ears don't mix well, and most people don't think about that until something hurts.

What Swimmer's Ear Actually Feels Like

Swimmer's ear starts when water gets trapped in your ear canal. Warm, dark, and moist environments create the perfect setup for bacteria to grow. Lake water is especially risky because it carries more bacteria than a chlorinated pool.

The first sign is usually itching. Then comes that dull ache deep in your ear. If you ignore it, it can turn into a full infection that makes it painful to sleep, chew, or even touch the outside of your ear. Kids get it more often because their ear canals are smaller and don't drain as easily. But plenty of adults deal with it too, especially after a full weekend in and out of the water.

The good news is it's almost entirely preventable.

Why Foam Plugs from the Pharmacy Don't Cut It

Those foam plugs near the checkout lane are cheap and convenient. The problem is they're made for a generic, average ear, but your ears aren't average. They're yours, and they're shaped differently than everyone else's.

A plug that's slightly too small lets water sneak in around the edges the whole time you're swimming. One that's too big gets uncomfortable fast, so you pull it out halfway through the afternoon. Either way, you're not protected. And foam plugs tend to work themselves loose when you're diving or moving around in the water, often without you noticing until your ear is already wet.

How Custom Swim Plugs Work

Custom swim plugs start with an impression of your actual ear canal, taken right here in our office. That impression goes to a lab where a plug is molded to fit your exact anatomy, ensuring a precise fit rather than a close guess.

That fit is everything. A proper seal keeps water out completely, whether you're doing laps, kayaking, or just floating around for hours. Your ear canal stays dry, which is what stops bacteria from taking hold in the first place. Custom plugs also stay in place. No fiddling, no adjusting, no fishing one out of the lake. For families spending entire weekends on the water, that reliability is a bigger deal than most people expect before they try them.

Who Should Consider Getting Fitted

Custom earplugs aren't just for competitive swimmers. They're worth it for anyone who spends real time in the water.

  • Kids who've had swimmer's ear before or who are prone to ear infections
  • Regular swimmers, boaters, or paddleboarders on Lake George or Saratoga Lake
  • Anyone with ear tubes or a history of ear surgery, since water getting in can cause serious problems
  • Divers and water sports enthusiasts who spend extended time submerged
  • Anyone who's already been through a painful infection and doesn't want to go through it again

Custom earmolds are also useful outside the water. Musicians, hunters, and people regularly around loud noise all benefit from protection built to their own ear shape rather than a generic one-size product.

What to Expect at Your Fitting Appointment

Getting fitted takes less time than most people think. You come in, we take impressions of both ears using a soft material that sets quickly, and that's the bulk of it. The whole process is comfortable and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Your custom plugs are ready within a couple of weeks.

When they arrive, we'll show you how to insert them correctly and how to care for them. With proper maintenance, a good pair of custom swim plugs lasts for several years. This means you won't be buying foam plugs every summer or skipping protection because the last pair fell apart.

Don't Wait Until Your Ear Already Hurts

If your family is already spending weekends at the lake, now is the time to get set up, rather than waiting for the first infection of the season. Swimmer's ear has a way of showing up on a Friday night when nothing is open, and it can sideline your whole weekend.

We see patients at our Queensbury and Saratoga Springs offices and are happy to fit both adults and kids. Give us a call at (518) 267-7752 to schedule your appointment, and participate in the water activities you love knowing your ears are covered.
